° Kingsford, Florence [Lady Cockerell] (1871-1949), (illustrator), Graily Hewitt (1864-1952), (calligrapher) - Hymn of Saint Francis, with an finely executed illuminated title, the borders worked with Saint Francis and seven muses, walking in a garden amongst formal flowering shrubs, with 6 pages of poetry in opposing English/Latin text, in black ink calligraphy, the Latin pages with initial capital letters in gold, the final leaf with an inner margin, illuminated with trailing fruiting pear trees, adorned with squirrels and pigeons, all on vellum, 8vo, (223 x 150mm), blue morocco, with a gilt lettered upper board and spine, by Katherine Adams (1862-1952), the 2nd president of the Women’s Guild of Art.?? Note: This work was exhibited in January, 1906 by Sydney Cockerell, in the case of illuminated books, number 239 (d), in the Large Gallery, at the eighth exhibition of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, in the Grafton Gallery.
The Hymn of Saint Francis, also known as the Canticle of the Sun, or Laudes Creaturarum, was translated from the Latin of the Franciscan friar, Jacopone da Tori (died 1306), into English by Matthew Arnold in the mid-19th century. However, Dante Gabriel Rossetti also translated it in 1869, as in the present work
